Upgrading CRM 4.0 to CRM 2011?

NOTE: ClickDimensions ended technical support for customers who have ClickDimensions installed in CRM 4.0 and are upgrading to CRM 2011+ on December 31, 2015. ClickDimensions will end technical support for customers using ClickDimensions in Microsoft CRM 4.0 on December 31, 2016.  See this announcement for details.

If you are upgrading your CRM 4.0 environment to CRM 2011 and you have ClickDimensions installed in your CRM 4.0 organization, there is no direct, supported, process for upgrading with ClickDimensions installed.

Background

Microsoft made significant changes to how third-party add-ons are handled in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011. CRM now uses a “managed solution” model to make it easier to install, update and remove custom solutions. CRM 4.0 customizations do not use a solution model – customizations in CRM 4.0 are not differentiated between system default behaviors, your own customizations, or third-party customizations. Microsoft did not provide a supported way to convert the CRM 4.0 customizations for a third-party solution into the managed solution model introduced in CRM 2011.

Best practice

ClickDimensions recommends backing up your database in CRM 4.0 and uninstalling the ClickDimensions customizations prior to performing your upgrade to CRM 2011 or newer. After upgrading your CRM, you can request a new ClickDimensions solution. If you wish to retain any data from your prior work with ClickDimensions, you would then need to migrate the data from your CRM 4.0 backup into your newly upgraded CRM system. ClickDimensions does not perform this migration for you.
